HALLS RIDGE

On this amazing Santa Lucia Preserve site, large-scale plantings of indigenous oaks, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers play upon the bold architectural lines by Bohlin Cywinsky Jackson. The result is a sculptural landscape that responds to the outstanding borrowed views to the south, east, and west. The building design focuses on large ‘view ports’ from the interior looking out toward the immediate built landscape and then further beyond to the surrounding mountain range. These borrowed views appear as ‘landscape paintings’ from inside the residence. The seasonal patterns created by climate and light quality endlessly transform the landscape through time.

The planting restoration establishes seamless connections to the precious native plant communities and ecologies surrounding the property. Our efforts here are the result of an accumulated knowledge through working on other ecologically sensitive sites in this region. The local ecologies take time to understand, and with each project, we have taken the time and effort to establish new directions through research and experimentation.
